If you’ve made it down here, well done! But more importantly don’t forget to come back tomorrow when I’ll announce my books of the year!

One of the best things about this time of year is reading everyone else’s end-of-year wrap-ups! So, if you’ve posted one yourself, please feel free to post a link to it in the MrLinky below. (I’ve taken the opportunity to add a few I’ve already come across)

It’s at this time of year that I’m sure many a book-blogger’s mind is starting to compile their review-of-the-year posts, planning to stuff them with book lists, reading stats, challenge results, and much more bookish goodness.

One feature that will almost certainly be present in all of them is the ‘Books/Reads of the Year’ section.

For some of us this will be an easy thing to assemble, half-a-dozen books will instantly be obvious to us (and probably have been all year) without us having to think seriously about it, for others it will more difficult, the initial list will be embarrassingly long, and will need some serious trimming to bring it down to anywhere near a manageable size! For those of us that have had a really bad year’s reading, we might not be able to even think of a single book that deserves the accolade… *shudders at the thought*

My question today is, what criteria do you use to make the final selection?

Does a book have to be perfect both in terms of the writing and your enjoyment?

Is it just an enjoyment thing?

Does the writing have to be exquisite, no matter what your enjoyment levels?

Or is it some indefinable thing?

One of the reasons I ask is that last year, I had at least one book I enjoyed so much it made the list despite it not being among my top ’starred’ books of the year.

A few months ago, I posted about the Top Five YA Dystopian novels I had read in the last year…

I received some great suggestions to add to the list in the comments to that post, and I myself have read some other great books that didn’t meat the criteria of being read in the previous 12 months.

Since then the post has received a steady stream of visitors coming in via search engines, so as there appears to be an interest, I thought I’d put together a more substantial, though certainly not comprehensive (but hopefully more helpful) list.

I’ll occasionally update the list, so feel free to mention your favourites in the comments if I’ve missed them.

Should you want to grab a copy of any of the books listed, clicking on the cover will take you to The Book Depository page for that book where you can purchase it with FREE worldwide delivery.

Chair James Naughtie, commented:

“We’re thrilled to be able to announce such a strong shortlist, so enticing that it will certainly give us a headache when we come to select the winner. The choice will be a difficult one. There is thundering narrative, great inventiveness, poetry and sharp human insight in abundance.

“These are six writers on the top of their form. They’ve given us great enjoyment already, and it’s a measure of our confidence in their books that all of us are looking forward to reading them yet again before we decide on the prizewinner. What more could we ask?”

So, who do you think will win?

So without further ado, I present, In no particular order, 10 Reasons Why YA Fiction Rocks (Even For Slightly Older Adults!)…

It’s more about the story, than the cleverness of the author.

Interesting characters.

Who not only serve the story, often are the story.

and who you actually care about.

Some of the most talented writers in the business write YA.

John Green.

Emotionally engaging writing.

Plot and Meaning

Great pacing.

Entertaining and often the most powerful tales you can hope to find.

Feel free to add your own reasons; why young adult fiction rocks, in the comments section.
