When We Collided | Emery Lord | Bloomsbury | April 2016
About the Book
Seventeen year old Jonah Daniels has lived in Verona Cove, California, his whole life, and only one thing has ever changed: his father used to be alive, and now he’s not. Now Jonah must numbly take care of his family as they reel from their tragedy. Cue next change: Vivi Alexander, new girl in town.
Vivi is in love with life. A gorgeous and unfiltered hurricane of thoughts and feelings. She seems like she’s from another planet as she transforms Jonah’s family and changes his life. But there are always consequences when worlds collide…
So, that was my tweet shortly after finishing When We Collided by Emery Lord. To be fair, I’m still feeling the same way now, two weeks later. Such was the way Emery Lord messed with my emotions!
If you’re going to read a book that is going to make you *feel* then you best like the characters. There’s no way I can Pick the right words that will do justice to just how much I loved Vivi and Jonah (and Jonah’s family!).
While it’s clear early on that Vivi is just a little bit too much of a whirlwind… I love the way she breezes into Jonah, and his siblings’ lives, flipping things around for the better. They way she is immediately at ease with both with ‘the littles’ (and the older ones). It really does leave a lasting impression from the first moment, and continues to do so until the end of the book.
The book’s tag line is “Can you fall in love when you’re falling apart?”. I think the better question is “Can you stay in love…” Even with all the issues their individual pasts provide and the more immediate problems the present serve them up, Vivi and Jonah don’t run and hide from them but stick by and support each other the best way they can.
Thankfully, this is no magic fix. “True love” does not sort everything. I like the ending, because they both still have plenty to work though as we leave them at the end of the book. Despite leaving on a positive note.
I loved just about everything about this one. Highly recommended.
