Once upon a Time in the North ~ Phillip Pullman

Once Upon a Time in the NorthPart of the His Dark Materials universe this slim tomb tells the tale of Lee Scoresby and Iorek Byrinson’s first meeting and the events that caused them to become friends.

When, Scoresby comes to rest in the northern arctic town of Novy Odense to rest and find a bit of work, little does he and his daemon Hester, realize they’re about to be thrown in the maelstrom of local politics, leading eventually to a gun fight for there very lives.

As ever Pullman’s writing is sublime, intelligent and could never be accused to talking down this his young adult audience, and this is a great if brief addition to the the world.

My only issue is (and it was the same with Lyra’s Oxford) wonderfully presented as it is, with it’s engraved illustrations and additional bits and pieces, this book as has a retail of £9.99 that’s substantially more than a normal book of 3-500 pages, yet this one has around 100 and is probably unlikely to be discounted anywhere.

It’s a shame, because that will price some fans out of the market, and they’re going to miss out.

You must read, His Dark Materials! They are absolutely fantastic books.

I will give you one tip though, everyone I know who has read the books, find the first quarter of Northern Lights a bit of a struggle, but then all of a sudden (and again they all report this), you get your face sucked off by the remaining 2 3/4s!

Didn’t realise this was linked to the Dark Materials books (which I’m yet to read) – I saw it on the kids shelf at ASDA on Saturday but it was £6.99 and I only buy the books that are £3.73! *lol*

The thought of engraved illustrations sounds just lovely…
