YA Dystopian Reading Challenge

Welcome to the YA-Dystopian Reading Challenge @ Bart’s Bookshelf

Letting people comment on your posts can lead to unexpected things! ;)

Such as hosting your first reading challenge. I suspect Joanna (The Book Zombie) knew exactly what she was doing, when she said:

So many great looking books, thanks for the list! Makes me think that someone should really create a YA Dystopian reading challenge :D

Well, what’s a book-blogger supposed to do?!

So, here I am, starting The YA Dystopian Reading Challenge! Taking place from October 15th through to the end of the year. (So yes, those 24 Hour Read-a-Thon books will count!)

Dystopia (from the Greek δυσ- and τόπος, alternatively, cacotopia, kakotopia, cackotopia, or anti-utopia) is the vision of a society in which conditions of life are miserable and characterized by poverty, oppression, war, violence, disease, pollution, nuclear fallout and/or the abridgement of human rights, resulting in widespread unhappiness, suffering, and other kinds of pain. (Source: Wikipedia)

The idea is to have fun with this, and as I know with the year-end rapidly approaching, thoughts will be turning to completing all the other challenges we are all signed up to! So your level of participation is up to you, simply pick a target of between 1 & 4 books to read during the two and a half months of the challenge.

It’s that easy. :)

There’s no need to list your selected books upfront, but it’s always fun to see everybody’s book pools :D (Not just because we all like to do a bit of book-coveting ;) but somebody might spot a great read they had never considered before!) So if you want to do that, then go right ahead.

Short of ideas for books? Then take a look at the original post, or this tagmesh on librarything, for plenty of great ideas!

Feel free to grab one of these buttons to use on your blog. (if you like the image, check out more of the photographer’s by Kr3stO’s Flickr stream, many thanks to Kr3stO for releasing it under a Creative Commons licence.)

Why not sign up for both and knock off two challenges for the price of one! DystopYA starts on the 5th and mine starts technically on the 15th, but I promise to look the other way, if you want to start both on the 5th! ;)

Not that I don’t have enough to do, but I read so much dystopian lit anyway, I might as well. And I LOVED The Knife of Never Letting Go; I just picked up The Ask and the Answer the other day. Hope you’re enjoying it. :)

  4. Chris says:

    I’m in for sure!!

  5. Lindy says:

  6. Tokemise says:

I’m going to join in on this fun challenge and try to get my teens to do it too. I’ll post on my blog and link back to you in a day or two after I chose my book list.

  7. Aly says:

Not like I don’t have enough on by TBR pile but since several of them are dystopian YA novels I’m in for the challenge. Hmmm..which ones do I want to start with.

  8. katrina says:

Grrr!!!!! And I said I wasn’t doing anymore challenges! I’m weak.
As I love this style of novel I’m all signed up, and have ordered Uglies, Exodus and The Knife of Never Letting Go from the library in preparation for the challenge.

  9. Joanne says:

Yahoo!! You are just the awesome of my day Bart! My comment wasn’t really meant as a *hint hint* more like wishful thinking ;) So glad to see you’ve created this challenge and what a fabulous logo! Now to make my list – my sign up post will be up this week :)

  10. Saw Ann’s post – havent read 3 of the books on her list – own two – so I’m joining both challenges. I know two books I’ll read are:
    Candor by Pam Bachorz
The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Not sure of third yet – possibly The Ask and The Answer by Patrick Ness since I have it here somewhere…

  11. Beth F says:

I’m definitely in this one. Just give me a day or so to get my post up and I’ll link up with Mr. Linky.

  12. Blame it on New Orleans Chris. I am seriously challenge-challenged, but I’m signing up because I’ve got The Forest of Hands and Teeth and Hunger Games. Might as well do something to shove myself into reading them. :)

  13. Aly says:

Finally decided on which four books I am going to use for the challenge…
Unwind by Neal Shusterman, Skinned by Robin Wasserman, The Maze Runner by James Dashner, and The Girl in the Arena by Lise Haines. Whew!

  14. shanda says:

This looks fun and just the kinds of books I like reading anyway!

  15. Corinne says:

OH snaps I am thrilled with this challenge! Thrilled, I tell you!! Thanks for hosting :)

Also, I just finished The Maze Runner by James Dashner – fits this challenge perfectly :)

  16. Cait says:

I love dystopias, so this challenge is amazing! Thanks so much for hosting it, I’m definitely joining :)

  17. Tia says:

I’ve been reviewing books on my blog as more of a private “journal” activity and was amazed to discover a huge community of book lovers out there (yeah, I’m slow to catch on). I still would have kept my writing to myself, but I am a huge fun of dystopic lit, and I’m always looking for new young adult works (gotta keep my 9th grade students reading), so this challenge has brought me out. I’m currently reading “Uglies” and am excited to read about other books I’ve missed!

  18. Kathryn says:

I am really excited about this challenge! I looked at a list and several of the books I want to read are on it so I am looking forward to it. Would His Dark Material trilogy be considered Dystopian? I don’t really know. Thanks!

  19. Bunny says:

there is so much good material for this challenge, and so many examples of the genre are already in my tbr pile. i’m in!

  20. I’m definitely joining in … will be posting on my blog tomorrow. I’ll be back to officially enter :) Thanks!

  21. Louise says:

Might be too late to join, but now I did it :)

  22. Laura says:

Thanks for the great challenge. It’s my first!

  23. Ii’m glad this challenge is 1-4 books because I’ve only done two and I’ll finish my third book January 1st.

  24. I’m glad you said we could choose from 1-4 books instead of an exact number. :)
