R.I.P IV [Complete]

rip4300 Carl from Stainless Steel Droppings, has announced the R.I.P 4 Challenge! Always a highlight of the reading year, I immediately wanted to start putting my reading pool together!

Unfortunately, less important things like work demanded their attention first… ;) So it had to wait. :( Thankfully tonight, I’ve managed to check out my bookshelves and see what I’ve got on them that meet the criteria.

And apart from a couple of books, I’m looking to actually reduce my TBR pile, what more excuse do I need to to join in?!

The desire for the thrill that comes with this kind of reading drifts in on the autumn winds. You breathe it in and it takes hold of you, tempting you to late nights, book-in-hand, turning pages and starting at every unknown noise. Something wicked this way comes…

There are various levels of participation, but I’ll let Carl explain it:

As I do each and every year, there are multiple levels of participation that allow you to be a part of R.I.P. IV without adding the burden of another commitment to your already busy lives.

R.I.P. IV officially runs from September 1st through October 31st. But lets go ahead and break the rules. Lets start today!!!

Multiple perils await you. You can participate in just one, or participate in them all.

rip4first

I’ve chosen to try for Peril the First, for which I need to:

Read Four books of any length, from any subgenre of scary stories that you choose.

The All Important Reading Pool!

Books read for the challenge have a darker background surrounding them!

Her Fearful Symmetry

Really, how can this not be on most peoples RIP4 reading lists? ;)

This one has been on my wishlist for ages, and when I managed to mooch a copy this year I knew exactly which challenge I’d be keeping it for! :D

image

Been on my shelves for a while now, seems the perfect time to pull it off the shelves and give it a go.

image

Bowler has turned out to be one of my favourite discoveries of the last 18 months, so how could I resist this one? Which I’ve seen described as:
“a truly addictive psychological thriller – you will not be disappointed.”

110% Eva’s fault!

One I didn’t get around to during R.I.P III.

Another one of those I’ve added to my TBR pile whilst reading your book blogs!

Have to say I wasn’t convinced by Blood and Chocolate when I read it last year, but I managed to get this via book mooch, so I’m going to give Curtis Klause another go.

A remainder from last years RIP reading pool, I certainly intend to read this one, this time around. I really enjoyed Jordan’s The
Juniper Game, so I have high hopes.

image

Never read a thing by him, but his books always tempt me, when I go into my local bookshop, I think this one one could be good. :)

image

Possibly a loose interpretation of the rules to include this one, but you need some variety, right? ;)

Giving in to peer-pressure can sometimes be a good thing!

Graven Images by Paul Fleischman

Completely forgot I had this one on the shelves! Fun little read.

[Review]

The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness

Sequel to #TKNOLG!

[Review]

Review: The Ghost of Thomas Kempe by Penelope Lively

Added this one to the pile because of Nymeth!

[Review]

Of course, I maintain my right to switch and swap books for no apparent reason what-so-ever :D Have you read any of the above? Which should I start with (remembering I’ll have to wait for Her Fearful Symmetry to be released!)

So glad you are in again Bart! Lovely list of books. You’re certainly right about Her Fearful Symmetry. I can only imagine that practically everyone will be reading that book. I can’t wait, actually. I had A Certain Slant of Light out from the library recently, on recommendation from our wonderful sponsor Jennifer Gordon, and then ended up being caught up in other books and took it back. I really do want to get it again sometime and actually read it this time.

I’m thinking that Her Fearful Symmetry is this years The Graveyard Book, for the number of book-pools it is appearing in! ;)

I’m looking forward to Certain Slant of Light, I had a friend recommend it ages ago.

  2. Eva says:

Yay for We Have Always Lived in the Castle!! And Her Fearful Symm. would be on my list, but I’m not sure I’ll get it from the library in time. (I’m #30, but the lib’s getting 15 copies, so there’s hope.)

A Certain Slant of Light was interesting-I listened to it on CD back in 2007 and enjoyed it. Not a mind-blowing read, but definitely good! :)

Off to look up The Other Ones-that cover is great.

  3. I just realized that I have some of those books as well. More for my pool! Why can’t October be three months long??

It sounds like HER FEARFUL SYMMETRY is going to be this year’s GRAVEYARD BOOK. :)

I haven’t read anything from your pool, but I’ve heard wonderful things about WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE. Mostly from Eva, come to think of it….

  6. Chris says:

Oh crap…I see lots of books that I don’t have on my wishlist already :/ You know what that means…I like the UK cover of Her Fearful Symmetry SO MUCH BETTER than the US cover! I think I may just have to place a Book Depository order! Ours is just so bland. Not horrible…yours is just better. Great pool!

    • Carl V. says:

That is so funny Chris, because I feel exactly the opposite. While I think the UK cover is kind of cute, it doesn’t fit the mood that I expect this book to have at all and I prefer the creepy trees of the US version. Now the reality is that I think both are terrible in comparison to the cover for Time Traveler’s Wife. If you put them side by side, the US cover looks lazy compared to TTW and the UK cover, looks kind of silly. I would actually prefer the UK cover more if it didn’t have the girls on the front (can’t believe I just said that! LOL!) because it at least looks like it has a cemetery in it. Since this is set at Highgate Cemetery, I think the US cover should have had some kind of cool picture of the cemetery.

You know, I think I may have actually sat right here and talked myself into the UK version…if I could get it without the TTW sticker which throws off the whole aesthetic.

      Lord, I need more sleep!

      • Carl V. says:

Also, I’m wondering now if the UK version and the US version are different? Anyone know. I’ve certainly heard that some editors change the British phrases, etc. to the Americanized versions for each book respectively. As this is set in the UK I would much rather have a version that uses UK language. Does that make any sense?

      • Bart says:

Yeah, the TTW sticker is just… Terrible. Hopefully it will be a removable one, and not one of those that are printed on thing.

    • Bart says:

Yes, I think that I prefer the UK one as well (makes up for the &^%^%&% that is the UK cover for Forest of Hands and Teeth!).

As for me adding to your wishlist, do you remember how many books you had in your reading pool?!!!

I’ve been seeing so many amazing lists for this challenge! I’m having a hard time choosing mine and I’ve been putting it off trying to think of the absolute best possible books. I’m supposed to be on a new-books-reading hiatus! (but will break my rules for this challenge which looks excellent)

The Time Traveller’s Wife was published here in the UK with the American spelling of Traveller so I’m guessing if that wasn’t changed nothing else was, and that the same would go for her other books.
Her Fearful Symmetry is on my Christmas list as I’m not supposed to be buying books :(

A Certain Slant of Light is great I read amd reviewed it a few days sgo, go read it soon.
