5 Books I’d Save From my Burning Bookcase by Andy Briggs

Today I am excited to be a host on the Black Knight blog tour by Andy Briggs. I’ve not quite got my review for the book, as I’m still reading it at the moment, but it’s shaping up to be every bit as awesome as the first two. I do have a guest post from the author, Andy Briggs, though, who is sharing the books he’d risk life and limb to pluck from a burning bookcase!

What a question! What five books would I save from my burning bookcase? Wow. First of all, I take it that this evil question takes in account that I haven’t developed hulk-like powers and hurled the bookcase through the wall, thus dousing the flames, saving the cat and beating my chest like an epic hero.

So, five books. Here we go:

THE LOST WORLD – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Forget Sherlock. This is Doyle’s finest work. Set in the jungles of South America, we follow Victorian scientist Professor Challenger as he searches for proof the dinosaurs are still alive, somewhere out there…

THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY – Douglas Adams. An epic adventure that follows hapless hitchhiker, Arthur Dent, as he travels the universe, meets talking mice, puts a fish in his ear, and makes sure he always has a towel with him. Plus, I would cheat and save the omnibus edition of all the Hitchhiker books…

TRAVELS – Michael Crichton.  From the author of Jurassic Park, Congo and numerous other adventure books comes… a non-fiction book. This is more of a travelogue, exploring how Crichton’s travels around the globe influenced his writing and world view. I must read for all creatives. I take my copy on virtually every holiday, so it’s got a little battered over the years:

MORT – Terry Pratchett. Not only is this by far my favourite Terry Pratchett book, the great man himself signed my personal copy. I own a complete Pratchett collection (as I assume most civilised people do) and each and every one of them is a joy to pull off the shelf every now and again to re-read. So, again I shall cheat, and hurl the entire collection out in one go…

THE FAR SIDE – Gary Larsen. My final choice is a little left-field, as are the contents. The Far Side cartoons are single panels, mainly of talking animals delivering a perfect punchline. I have loved these cartoons for as long as I can remember and they never fail to make me smile. The extra advantage is I have the complete Far Side boxset, which is incredibly heavy and will nicely smash through the window as I make my escape from the encroaching flames…
