Defender of the Realm | Mark Huckerby & Nick Ostler | Scholastic | March 2016
Alfie thought he knew his destiny. He didn’t know the half of it.
Fourteen year old heir to the throne, Alfie, didn’t expect to be King so soon. He DEFINITELY did not expect to be …DEFENDER OF THE REALM.
A legendary superhero, fighting a secret, centuries-long, battle to protect the nation from monsters and super-villains.
An ordinary girl, Hayley Hicks, finds herself fighting alongside Alfie in a desperate struggle to stop a fearsome new enemy, the Black Dragon.
In a few days time Mark will be stopping by the blog as part of the Defender of the Realm blog tour. But today I’m going to let you know my thoughts about the book.
Defender of the Realm is the first book from Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler. Emmy and BAFTA-nominated screenwriters best known for writing popular TV shows such as Danger Mouse and Thunderbirds Are Go!
Their experience in writing TV shows for kids is clear as the fun and action starts from the first page and doesn’t ever let up until the final page, and with the way the book ends beyond even that!
The early scenes in the book where Alfie is trying to escape the ‘prison’ that is his boarding-school, are really fun, especially his relationship with his bodyguard which provides a fair amount of laughs!
Hayley is a wonderful character, looking after her gran who is beginning to lose her memory, and tying to keep people from finding out, so that they can stay together.
When events throw them together she shows that same loyalty to Alfie, despite the misgivings of some at the palace, they form a quick and strong friendship, and will fight for each other until the end, even in the face of the black dragon.
The pace of story will keep even reluctant readers turning the pages, and demanding the next book in the series.
