Review
I really enjoyed Divergent last year (although it didn’t quite reach the top echelons) so it was with a lot of anticipation, that I waited for its sequel Insurgent, to drop though my letterbox. Of course almost the minute it did. Real Life™ hit, and I’ve really struggled to eke out the time to read it.
So, it’s taken me most of the week. But, let me get this out right now. If I’d had the time, I would have read this straight though, because my god, it’s good!
Veronica Roth, has done that special thing and written a sequel that surpasses the first book. The characters, don’t miraculously recover from the events of the first book. Everything that happened to them in Divergent continues to haunt and drive them in Insurgent. Tris in particular has a lot to sort out, but Ms Roth doesn’t give her much opportunity to do so, before she starts to throw more smelly stuff at her!
The plot continues to expand on first book. If you think you know what’s going on, think again!. There are twists and shocking revelations, layered on more twists and shocking revelations, with a liberal sprinkling of secrets on top, just to keep things interesting!
You’ll just be getting your head around one shocking revelation, when Tris or Four find themselves in yet another sticky situation, and you’ll be wondering how the hell they’ll get out of it this time.
Despite the relentless twists and turns it’s not a brainless roller-coaster ride. Veronica Roth keeps a tight rein on her story (and by this I mean both Insurgent and the series as a whole). Things happen for a reason, other than to just make your jaw-drop (and drop your jaw will…) everything that happens in the book, and not just the rather large cliff-hanger at the end, that will have you clamouring for book three!

Great review Darren! I was so impressed that Roth actually managed to outdo Divergent. I agree as well with what you said about Tris bring haunted by the events from book one; I love how she didn’t just get over things straight away for convenience sake.
I would find it very hard to list why Divergent just missed out on being a 6* read last year, but whatever it was, just wasn’t an issue in Insurgent. I was really impressed.
I SURE hope that this series lives up to its expectations. I am scared to read it, simply because I don’t want to be let down. But I guess I need to get over it and start this series.
I’m pretty sure you won’t be let down. Even if you don’t love it like the rest of us, it is still a really solid read.
What did you think to TFiOS?
Awesome review, Darren! This book was just fantastic! And I loved, too, how Tris had to continue dealing witht he events of Divergent; made the story that much more credible!
Yeah, stuff like that sometimes gets lost in the need to tell the next books own story, I was glad to see that it was very much part of that story, in this one.
Like Carly and Allison said above, I was a bit nervous before starting Insurgent because I wasn’t sure if it could be as good as Divergent, but it was seriously awesome! Great review
Thanks. It was a great read, wasn’t it?!
I’ll confess right away that I only skimmed your review in case there were spoilers. I’ve got this sitting on my nightstand to read this weekend and I am VERY EXCITED! Glad to hear you liked it
I don’t think I posted anything terribly spoilerific, but probably a good decision. Have fun at the weekend with the book!
A great concise review! I’m even more excited to get my hands on it after Lesley my fellow BBLB blogger has finished with it!
Have fun, once you manage to prise it from her!
I preferred Divergent
I really should give this author a try.
Ooo so jealous! I read Divergent last year too and loved it. I just loaned it to someone who loved it too. I can’t wait to get my hands on this one. Good to know it lives up to the hype!
I couldn’t agree with you more Darren, I was scared this wouldn’t live up to my expectations and was incredibly impressed that Veronica Roth managed to surpass Divergent! I loved the way the characters didn’t just brush off events from the last book & that they had a long term effect on their emotions
Great review! I have been out of the book blogging scene for so long, that I’m only just now hearing about these books. But the more I read, the more I think I’ve got to get my hands on a copy of Divergent. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these books!
Cant wait to read this book! OMG. Such a great review, nowim even more excited! x
