Review: Slog’s Dad by David Almond & Dave McKean

Review: Slogs Dad by David Almond & Dave McKeanPart story, part graphic novel – a tender slice of life and death from the creators of “The Savage”.

Do you believe there’s life after death? Slog does. He reckons that the scruffy bloke sitting outside the pork shop is his dad come back to visit him for one last time – just like he’d said he would, just before he died.

Slog’s mate Davie isn’t convinced. But how does this man know everything Slog’s dad would know? Because Slog says it really is his dad, that’s how.

– Publisher’s Blurb

As, The Savage proved, the combination of David Almond’s profound writing and Dave McKean’s wonderful artwork, can be an absolutely perfect match.

I’m pleased to say with Slog’s Dad, they’ve collaborated once again, with this short moving tale of a young boy grieving for dead father,  and yearning to see him, just one more time.

Review: Slogs Dad by David Almond & Dave McKeanIt is short, very short in fact, but Almond has always been the kind of writer that can pack an emotional punch with few words. And McKean really manages to add so much extra to that with his artwork. I just wish it was all a little longer, a chance to know a little more about the characters, feel for Slog personally, rather than a little-boy-lost.

The brevity, just, (and only just) stops this one from being a really great little book.
