Review: Invisible Fiends: The Crowmaster by Barry Hutchison
February 21, 2011 in Children's & Young Adult, Horror, Reviews
After Kyle’s ordeal at school, his mother packs him off to the safety of the countryside, where there will be no temptation to use his powers, and he can forget the bad things – like the fact that his dad is a monster determined to destroy the world.
But here’s the thing about the countryside: it’s full of nature, and nature sometimes has claws. Followed by a spindly figure in the woods and attacked by crows, Kyle is about to discover that NOWHERE is safe from the invisible fiends!

I received this one in the post from the lovely people at Harper Collins when I agreed to be part of the book’s blog-tour. You may have spotted the tour banner in my sidebar, if you’ve visited my site recently, be sure to check out the other stops when you’re done here!
As well as this review, I’ll also be posting a Q&A with the author Barry Hutchinson. You’ll want to be sure to come back for that, as you’ll also have the chance to win a copy of the book!
The Crowmaster is the third book in the Invisible Fiends series, and while reading the first two books can only increase your enjoyment of this one, I found enough is recapped for me not to feel too lost as to what was going on.
What a delightfully creepy read this was! It might well be aimed at the 9-12 year-old market, but that doesn’t mean an adult reader still won’t find the odd shiver going up their spine, or read with one hand holding the book open the other covering their eyes, during the crow attacks. It’s a book (and from what I can tell the series) that attempts to scare by creeping the reader out rather than grossing them out. But it’s not afraid to do that either. (Seriously, flesh-eating crows! *shudders*).
As well as trying to escape The Crowmaster, Kyle learns a little more of his fathers evil plans for the world. The immediate future does not bode well for Kyle and his family and friends!
I can definitely see myself reading more of Kyle’s battles against his father and his band of invisible fiends.
If you’ve got a ten-year old boy in your family he’s bound to love this one! Just make sure he lets you read it too!
