– Publisher’s Blurb
I know a lot of people are fed of seeing this one, after it slightly overwhelmed your feed reader a few weeks back, but if you can find it in yourself to give it another chance, then I can heartily recommend it!
I should start by saying that this not a new book by Garth Stein, but a reissue of his first book, which was originally published in 1998.
The above publisher’s blurb doesn’t really give a proper feel about what the book is about. The plot line that binds everything together, is that of Jenna’s attempt to finally deal with her grief two years after the death of her young son.
However this book weaves so much more into its 445 pages, the mystery of what happened to her son, is slowly revealed throughout the story (yes it’s clear what think might have happened fairly early on) but the discovery of that truth is nicely done. The relationship between Jenna and her husband also undergoes its own journey, and your never sure until the end whether it will survive or not.
And woven into this is the culture and folklore of the Tlingit people, this added a really intriguing and enjoyable dimension to story, and some genuinely spine-tingly moments as the story reaches its dénouement.
This touching and mysterious tale is well worth your time.

I actually really enjoyed this book myself. It’s definitely a bummer that people seem to have gotten oversaturated with reviews and been turned off to it, because it really is worth a read!
Thanks, I saw this at the book store and thought it was new.. good to know.
I’m glad to see that you enjoyed it. I have seen mixed reviews and responses, so I haven’t quite decided if I’m willing to commit the time to read this one yet.
Well, I think I must have overlooked all those reviews and comments, and while the cover does ring a bell, I don’t think I’ve read any of the reviews. And now I want to read the book
I must admit I missed most of them as well, it was only the disgruntled aftermath I caught bits of.
