Sunday Salon: What Book Acquiring Ban?
February 28, 2010 in Blog
Well, this week brought to the end of a couple of things, first off was a week-and-a-half off of work, which was to use up the last of my annual holidays, and was much needed after the overtime I’ve put in recently.
I managed to get some decent reading time in, while I was at home, unfortunately not Douglas Coupland’s: All Families are Psychotic which I’m (supposed) to be reading with Kelly for a joint review, but I stupidly left in my desk at work and only just remembered to bring it home yesterday after two days back.
Sorry about that Kelly, I fully intend to spend a little time today (and next week) catching up!
Depending on how I do with that, I’m certainly hoping to read a chapter or two of Freaks by Annette Curtis Klause, which I got this week and am really enjoying so far. And whose cover I absolutely love.
Which brings me to the other thing that ended this month (today actually): my 3 month long, Book Acquiring Ban. When it commenced on the 1st Dec, I had 170 unread books on the shelves, of which I immediately cleared out 22 to the local charity shop, leaving me with a base number of 148 to try and drag down some.
At the time I made this suggestion:
If I can get it down by 15-20 books over the next three months I’ll consider it a success.
ROFLMAO! ROFLMAO! ROFLMAO! ROFLMAO!
*ahem*
As of today, I have 156 unread books on my bookshelves! I suppose an increase of only 8 over 3 months is better than what I was achieving, so it’s somewhat on an improvement. Isn’t it?
*looks on hopefully*
Still, they do have some lovely new shelves to live on!
So, I know a few of you have been doing something similar, make me feel better and tell me how badly you failed!

Wow, the TBR stack stories are showing up all over the Blogosphere! I guess we are all working on it. A few months ago (Sept.), I wrote a post about my out-of-control TBR stacks. At that time, there were 167 books unread on those piles, and some of them had been there for two-three years!
So I photographed them and put those photos in the post, and then started a new blog called CURL UP AND READ, in which I am documenting my progress through those stacks. That was in November, and since then, I have whittled the stacks down to 137…but sadly, I keep adding books to read and keep receiving new ones to review (which I haven’t added to that original number!), so it’s some out and others in.
It feels like progress when the numbers of the original stacks are going down, but I’m adding other piles here and there throughout the house. When I look at the list, it looks like good progress…but not when I look around my house! LOL.
Oh, well…if a person is a bookaholic, that’s kind of how it goes, don’t you think?
Here’s my Salon:

Failed, completely. In fact, I refused to give myself a book buying ban! I managed to buy 7 books since New Year’s Day! lol I am trying to blend reading new books with ones on my TBR shelf, but the lure of shiny new books seems irresistible when I pass by the bookstore on my way home every night!! I love your bookshelves, very organized and I’m such a bookaholic that I’m craning my neck trying to read your titles!!! lol

I feel like i’ve done pretty well since Christmas. I’ve only bought 11 books! unfortunately, i looked back at an old post from last May and i wrote i had 80 books on my TBR whereas now i’m up to…128. *SIGH* maybe we don’t buy them, maybe they reproduce on our shelves?

I think it’s the Harry Potter books fault, they’ve been sitting there quietly on my shelves, when all the time they have been teaching all the other books to Apparate, who in turn have taught their friends. Which I why I have so many books mysteriously appearing there…
At least that’s my excuse!
We are all hopeless, aren’t we?
Oh this post made me smile so much. and I LOVE your shelves!
I am jealous!! First off, your shelves are organized. Second, I love the bookshelves, where did you get them?
OH Darren you just don’t want to know how bad I’ve been failing as of late :p Let’s just say that as of the last vlog I’ve had 10 MORE books come into the house and I’m waitin on 9 more to come from BookCloseouts. BUT BUT BUT! I did just get rid of 82 BOOKS from my shelves last nigh!!! Total win!!! So now I’m down to owning just over 600 books >> BTW, the shelves look EXCELLENT

Hee! Hee!
I knew I could rely on you, Chris!
Hey, you tried! That’s more than I would ever dare do.
I gave your blog an award:

I suck at my own (continual) self imposed book buying bans! Granted I always post books I’ve read to be swapped out as soon as I’ve read them to make up for the new swappees I get in but that means I am not supposed to buy new ones, yet I do, I always do
Good job with your ban! And great new bookcase!

Awesome bookshelves!! And you don’t want to know how many unread books I own!

Nice shelves you have there
I have to admit that I’ve been good and not paid for any new books – but I keep receiving them from publishers so the pile is still growing at an alarming pace lol

I knew I’d never be able to deal with a book acquiring ban, so I haven’t signed up for any of the challenges going around that are of that nature. When I get rid of books more just seem to show up even if I haven’t requested them, and then there’s always paperbackswap, and don’t get me started on the used book shelf at the library.
The bookshelves look great!
