Top Ten Books of the Year! [A Reading Year in Review 2009 Pt3]

Favourite Books of the Year!

I had a hard time weeding out and choosing between different books in a series for these (didn’t seem fair to leave them out!), so for each of the following sections, there is no particular order and any book could count :) In the final section where I select my top-ten of the year, only one book from a series is allowed, so it’s entirely possible books that don’t feature in the breakdown will show up!

Overall Top-Ten Books of the Year

1 ya1 Reviewed: 17/10/2009

It was a difficult choice to choose between this on and the first in the series, The Knife of Never Letting Go, but in the end, I think the slightly slower pace and themes in this one just edge it out.

“That was an effing brilliant read.  Only I don’t say ‘effing’ do I?”

For a long time this was my read of the year, only beaten at the end of the year.

It takes a writer of Pratchett’s skill and experience to get this balance right, and I’d say it is one of the best things he has written. Period. Some may be funnier, some may be more entertaining, some may be more exciting, some may even contain ‘some thinking’. But as a package. this is stand out, excellent. and the first addition to my 2009 best reads list.

Part of the Old Man’s War world, this was again a hard one to choose between any of the books in the series, I almost went for the 1st book, but in the end, it was Zoe’s voice that won out.

This is certainly going to be one of may favourite books of the year, and Zoë is one of my new favourite literary characters.

I had pretty much dismissed this book when I first heard about it, thinking it an ‘issue’ book, how glad I am, I listened to you all and grabbed this one when it was released here in the UK. Because of the thrill of discovering the world, this one just edges out Catching Fire.

…if this book doesn’t make my top books of the year list, then I have some bloody good books to read between now and December, this is a powerful page-turning adventure story that will linger long after the last page is turned.

One of the few books I read twice this year, so pleased that the Nerd’s ♥ YA Tournament, brought it to my attention.

It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed a book so thoroughly. It’s an utter delight to read, from start to finish

6 Book Cover of Staclimber by Kenneth Oppel Reviewed: 12/08/2009

I loved the first two books in this series, so it was with some excitement (and trepidation) that I picked up this one. Could it be as good as the first two?

A wonderful, satisfying and complete conclusion to the trilogy. That is as easily as good as the first two, and likely to be in one of my favourite books of the year.

7 Book Cover of Revolver by Marcus Sedgwick Reviewed: 19/12/2009

If you’re a regular visitor round these parts, then you’ll know I love me some Marcus Sedgwick reading matter… You’ll also know the very wonderful @stormfilled managed to snag me a signed copy of this one.

Impeccably researched and wonderfully written, with this one, Sedgwick, continues to be one of my favourite writers of recent years.

8 One-Day-by-David-Nichols Reviewed: 15/07/2009

I picked this one up, firstly because I liked the cover ;) and then I read the synopsis, following one day each year out of the two protagonists lives.

One Day, is at times moving, funny and sad, and then you’ll turn the page and laugh your face off! Highly, Highly recommended.

9 Book Cover of Leviathan Reviewed: 28/12/2009

I can’t believe I’ve only discovered Scott Westerfeld this year! And yet this was one of my most anticipated releases!

With tanks that walk, lizards that carry messages, fantastic characters, and allsorts of other steampunky goodness this is book that is just made of awesome!

It’s got some fantastic and powerful writing so It’s no surprise to me it makes the top-ten

He was an author I knew friends had read, and really enjoyed, but for whatever reason, I didn’t think it was my sort of thing.

Which is a great shame, because I could have been reading this fantastic author for years now.

One of the best things about this time of year is reading everyone else’s end-of-year wrap-ups! So, if you’ve posted one yourself, please feel free to post a link to it in the MrLinky below.

What a great list. I love that Leviathan and The Hunger Games are both on here. I admit I was too scared to read The Ask and the Answer, but it was good to hear you say it was slower and had more down moments. That was what bothered me about Knife and why I can only say I’m lukewarm towards it. I need down moments.

What a great list! I completely agree with your first two choices. The Ask and The Answer and Nation were on my list too. (I haven’t read Zoe’s Tale, yet, but I did read Old Man’s War and loved it enough to include on my own list.)

Great list! I just checked out Leviathan a few minutes ago from my library. Hunger Games and Catching Fire are great books. Can’t wait for HG 3 to come out. I have to thank you for introducing me the books of Marcus Sedgwick. What a great author. Happy New Year.

  9. Great list – and I love what you did with the graphics – those numbers are super cool :)

Love your list We read a lot of the same books but have different top tens.

  11. Memory says:

I love your Top 10! I really, really need to read Patrick Ness, but at this point I'm going to try to resist until all three books are out. If I like them as much as everyone else, I want to be able to read the whole series back to back. :)

  12. Louise says:

Great list of books. I agree about Hunger Games, it was a fantastic read. The Knife of Never Letting Go was one of the fatastic reads of 2009 as well, but I was disappointed with The Ask and the Answer. I am looking much forward to read the number threes in both trilogies though.

I have got to get the first in the Fables series I keep hearing such good things about it. Thanks for the top ten, several books in your lists are languishing my ever growing TBR pile. Perhaps that will be my 2010 theme….read what you have.

Several of your favourites are also on my list for the year. :) Happy reading in 2010!

Fantastic end of year post, Bart. Love seeing Scalzi on there. He was certainly one of my favorite author discoveries of the decade and I’m always thrilled to see others enjoying his works too.

I really want to give Leviathan a try at some point. After loving Boneshaker so much I am definitely in the mood for similar works.

I don’t recall reading about Kenneth Oppel’s series, but the cover certainly makes me want to take a look.

This a fantastic list! I’ve just added a few of these to my TBR list. Thanks for sharing these great recommendations!

Thanks! Which ones have I tempted you with?

      • Jody says:

I added The Knife of Never Letting Go because I hate to read books out of order, but you made both it ans The Ask and The Answer them look fantastic. I’d never even heard of My Most Excellent Year before, but again your review drew me in.

The Hunger Games and Leviathan were already on my TBR list, but seeing them on this impressive best of list made me want to read them even more!

  17. Susan says:

Great list! I’ve read through all three parts of your books of the year. I like how you put in a blurb from each of your reviews, too. I just posted mine today, mostly because I couldn’t decide before now what my books of the year were! I have Zoe’s Tale on my TBR shelf, and have been hearing about Scott Westerfield – it sounds very interesting. You did really well at reading over 100 books, I failed at the last hurdle, but I’m going to try again this year. Happy New Year, Darren!

    • Bart says:

You must give Zoe’s Tale and the Westerfeld ago. If you can get the audiobook the narrator for Zoe’s Tale is exceptionally good. :)

  18. Joanne says:

So cool to see that Coupland made your top 10 list, and very exciting to see Ask and Answer in the #1 spot – I can’t wait to begin reading that book!

And I have to say the design/layout of this post is absolutely fantastic!

Thanks! I do love putting these end of year posts together!

I’m hoping to read loads of Coupland this year, so he may well make the 2010 list as well!
