Top Ten Books of the Year! [A Reading Year in Review 2009 Pt3]
Favourite Books of the Year!
I had a hard time weeding out and choosing between different books in a series for these (didn’t seem fair to leave them out!), so for each of the following sections, there is no particular order and any book could count
In the final section where I select my top-ten of the year, only one book from a series is allowed, so it’s entirely possible books that don’t feature in the breakdown will show up!
Illustrated & Graphic Novels
Young Adult Novels
Science Fiction and Fantasy
General Fiction
Overall Top-Ten Books of the Year

It was a difficult choice to choose between this on and the first in the series, The Knife of Never Letting Go, but in the end, I think the slightly slower pace and themes in this one just edge it out.

For a long time this was my read of the year, only beaten at the end of the year.

Part of the Old Man’s War world, this was again a hard one to choose between any of the books in the series, I almost went for the 1st book, but in the end, it was Zoe’s voice that won out.

I had pretty much dismissed this book when I first heard about it, thinking it an ‘issue’ book, how glad I am, I listened to you all and grabbed this one when it was released here in the UK. Because of the thrill of discovering the world, this one just edges out Catching Fire.

One of the few books I read twice this year, so pleased that the Nerd’s ♥ YA Tournament, brought it to my attention.

I loved the first two books in this series, so it was with some excitement (and trepidation) that I picked up this one. Could it be as good as the first two?

If you’re a regular visitor round these parts, then you’ll know I love me some Marcus Sedgwick reading matter… You’ll also know the very wonderful @stormfilled managed to snag me a signed copy of this one.

One of the best things about this time of year is reading everyone else’s end-of-year wrap-ups! So, if you’ve posted one yourself, please feel free to post a link to it in the MrLinky below.

What a great list. I love that Leviathan and The Hunger Games are both on here. I admit I was too scared to read The Ask and the Answer, but it was good to hear you say it was slower and had more down moments. That was what bothered me about Knife and why I can only say I’m lukewarm towards it. I need down moments.

Well it’s still emotionally draining, but it’s not nearly as hectic.

Not only is that a great list, but what a beautifully organized and presented post. You have definitely added to my TBR list.

What a great list! I completely agree with your first two choices. The Ask and The Answer and Nation were on my list too. (I haven’t read Zoe’s Tale, yet, but I did read Old Man’s War and loved it enough to include on my own list.)

Great list! I just checked out Leviathan a few minutes ago from my library. Hunger Games and Catching Fire are great books. Can’t wait for HG 3 to come out. I have to thank you for introducing me the books of Marcus Sedgwick. What a great author. Happy New Year.

Great list – and I love what you did with the graphics – those numbers are super cool
p.s. I see you switched to Disqus too -interested to know what you think about it as opposed to the normal WP comment system.
Love your list We read a lot of the same books but have different top tens.
I love your Top 10! I really, really need to read Patrick Ness, but at this point I'm going to try to resist until all three books are out. If I like them as much as everyone else, I want to be able to read the whole series back to back.
Great list of books. I agree about Hunger Games, it was a fantastic read. The Knife of Never Letting Go was one of the fatastic reads of 2009 as well, but I was disappointed with The Ask and the Answer. I am looking much forward to read the number threes in both trilogies though.

I have got to get the first in the Fables series I keep hearing such good things about it. Thanks for the top ten, several books in your lists are languishing my ever growing TBR pile. Perhaps that will be my 2010 theme….read what you have.
Several of your favourites are also on my list for the year.
Happy reading in 2010!

Fantastic end of year post, Bart. Love seeing Scalzi on there. He was certainly one of my favorite author discoveries of the decade and I’m always thrilled to see others enjoying his works too.
I really want to give Leviathan a try at some point. After loving Boneshaker so much I am definitely in the mood for similar works.
I don’t recall reading about Kenneth Oppel’s series, but the cover certainly makes me want to take a look.
This a fantastic list! I’ve just added a few of these to my TBR list. Thanks for sharing these great recommendations!

Thanks! Which ones have I tempted you with?
I added The Knife of Never Letting Go because I hate to read books out of order, but you made both it ans The Ask and The Answer them look fantastic. I’d never even heard of My Most Excellent Year before, but again your review drew me in.
The Hunger Games and Leviathan were already on my TBR list, but seeing them on this impressive best of list made me want to read them even more!
Great list! I’ve read through all three parts of your books of the year. I like how you put in a blurb from each of your reviews, too. I just posted mine today, mostly because I couldn’t decide before now what my books of the year were! I have Zoe’s Tale on my TBR shelf, and have been hearing about Scott Westerfield – it sounds very interesting. You did really well at reading over 100 books, I failed at the last hurdle, but I’m going to try again this year. Happy New Year, Darren!
You must give Zoe’s Tale and the Westerfeld ago. If you can get the audiobook the narrator for Zoe’s Tale is exceptionally good.
So cool to see that Coupland made your top 10 list, and very exciting to see Ask and Answer in the #1 spot – I can’t wait to begin reading that book!
And I have to say the design/layout of this post is absolutely fantastic!

I’m hoping to read loads of Coupland this year, so he may well make the 2010 list as well!
