It Was a Charity Bookshop! Okay?

t13tale Everyone seems to have read this one and loved it, but the review which first tempted me was Nymeth’s. Can’t tell you how excited I am to finally have a copy of this one.

Bad Blogger’s point to Nymeth then!

This one spent a long time hanging around the featured shelves and tables at my local book store last year, and I was always tempted but never ended up buying a copy.
AMSTERDAM book cover Considering I didn’t particularly enjoy the only McEwan I’ve read (On Chesil Beech) I do seem to be getting quite the collection of McEwan’s books! (I now have this one, Enduring Love & Saturday to read)

My nephew commented he’d read this one, when he spotted by copy of Saturday. My nephew. Who. Does. Not. Read.

It was only 99p what was I to do?

  1. Thirteenth Tale is still on my TBR shelf. Happy reading.

  2. Beth F says:

    Put me in the love camp for 13th Tale and put me in the really, really disliked camp for Amsterdam.

  3. katrina says:

    13th Tale is great, I have Blood River very near the top of mount tbr, Amsterdam…..well, I actuslly can’t remember anything about it except disliking it – i have a hate/love relationship with Ian McEwan

  4. Bart says:

    @Beth F
    @katrina

    Yeah, after my experiences with On Chesil Beach I suspected that McEwan is going to be one of those authors for me as well.

  5. Eva says:

    Don’t worry-I got quite a few more books than you that I’ll be fessing up to shortly! ;) I’m fascinated by how different your cover of The 13th Tale is!

    • Bart says:

      Yeah, have to say I prefer the US one with the stack of books.

      (A book blogger liking a stack of books, who’d a thought of such a thing!) ;)

  6. Snowbell says:

    Not too fond of McEwan either… So good luck!
    Here’s my mailbox

    I didn’t know that you hadn’t read the Thirteenth Tale yet!!!! You are in for a HUGE treat!!! It is SUCH an awesome book. One of my all time faves. I have Amsterdam, but I still haven’t read it yet :/

  8. Marg says:

    Loved The Thirteenth Tale, kind of enjoyed Amsterdam but thought it was a bit strange in the end!

    Enjoy!

  9. Care says:

    hi! I enjoyed The Thirteenth Tale and have a crush on McEwan but have only read 2 of his books so far. Have a great week! Thanks for visiting me and cheering me on during the Read-a-Ton!

  10. Louise says:

    I liked The Thirteenth Tale but didn’t love it (in my book it sort of “tried too hard”). Looking forward to your review though.

    I’ve read one book by McEwan, and it was, without exaggerating, one of the worst reading experiences I’ve ever had. The book was Atonement, which so many seemed to love and adore. So no fan of McEwan, although I’ve only read that one.

  11. Jenners says:

    I think Ian McEwan has a strange hold on people. I too read just one of his books, didn’t totally love it but then found myself accumulating almost all the rest of his books for some reason. Very strange.

  12. Joanne says:

    Greatest post title ever!! Might have to borrow it from you next time I walk in the house with a bag of books – my old go-to excuse “they were 50% off” is getting a little overused :)

    Thirteenth Tale is amazing – I read it just last month and was so, so into it. After seeing the cover design of yours though, I wonder how it would change the readers expectations when starting it – my cover was the one that pictured a stack of old books.

  13. Great book shopping (and for a good cause!). A local church had a Harvest Fair today, which I was planning to attend (I went last year and got a huge bag of books!). But, the weather was unseasonably warm so we spent the day outside …
