Bookshot: Popular?
I’m temporarily pinching Daily Bookshot @ Rob Around Books, because I couldn’t resist posting a photograph of this one!
note: the dates!

When I was selecting my books for R.I.P IV I just knew that, We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, had to be among them, so I quickly paid a visit to my local library’s web-portal and was excited to find a copy available, even if it was located in the mysterious, Bibliographic Services department…
Imagine my shock when the last person to borrow the book before me, returned it in 1977… Thirty two years ago!!! I was 3! (Go on do the sums I’ll let you.
)
It’s a bit yellowed and worn, but it’s was very cool to be reading something that hasn’t likely been opened very often in nearly as long as I’ve been alive.
And the title I’ve given the post is a tad unfair, as it turns out, Bibliographic Services, is an archiving department.
There were some cool Lending Rules posted on to the inside cover as well.

What’s the oldest book you’ve had the chance to read?

Firstly Oi for stealing my Daily Bookshot
Secondly, the oldest ‘book’ I’ve read? Does a 1564 manuscript count? Housed in the University of St. Andrews (along with loads of others – some a lot earlier), I had to read and translate it (from Latin) as part of a paper on the Crusades. I’m rubbish at Latin so someone had to help
If it has to be a real book though – probably an 1894 book on the Plague of Athens, which I’m sure was published by Macmillan.
And no I wasn’t alive when either of those were published *pokes out tongue*

Warmest
Rob

I would never dream of suggesting such a thing!
Thanks for sharing the pictures! I’m not sure what the oldest book I’ve read is though.

Ooh, such beautiful pictures! I’m not sure about the oldest book in general, but I just checked out a copy of Winesburg, Ohio from the library and the book was put into circulation in 1947, so I figure that’s pretty old!
My grandparents were babies!

That looks like an awesome book. I love old books! I’m reading a Agatha Christie book that was printed in 1977, not very old compared to some others, but its older than me! (just!)

That is SO COOL! Although I love the convenience of the digital system at my library, I really miss getting to browse through the date stamps that used to be in the back of all the books – it was fascinating to me to see when each book was checked out. I was born in 1977 so it is really neat to see that date in your book.

I’ve got to ask – did you take Polaroid pics of these, or is that a fancy way of framing digital images? I like the Polaroid framing as much as the book pictures!
I don’t know the oldest book I’ve read. I have some on my shelves that have dates inside; they belonged to my grandparents and are from the 1940s and ’50s … I haven’t read them, though.

I use Windows Live Writer a lot to compose my posts and it’s one of the framing options that it it comes with! I thought they looked quite cool and suited the 1970’s theme with the dates!
