I much prefer the US cover – I also have been drawn to this book because of the US cover when I’ve seen it blogged about, but I have to say of the UK covers this id the best. My year 7 kids could have come up with better designs.
And just what have they done to poor Emily Bronte, (in a whisper) *its not actually a book I like – the second half ruins it*, but they haven’t even given her a capital E, and the kids will think they’re goind to get a modern book not something well over 100 years old

Yeah, I will admit, I’ve been spoiled by seeing the US cover all over the blogosphere, but I still wouldn’t pick up the UK one unless I knew about the book in the first place.

I’ll be honest here, I normally prefer US to UK covers, but I always figured it was because I’m American and they sell to me. I grew up thinking books with that type of cover were appealing, so now it’s automatic. I tend to find when browsing that UK covers draw me in less and I can’t figure out what they are about as easily just from a quick glance.

So I definitely prefer the US cover in this instance!

I also really dislike the way they put modern covers like that on classics – I just feel they should look classic, not like everything else that’s out there.

That’s okay, I’m sure we Brits can train you properly when you come back over! :P

But, in this case, then yes the US one is far superior!

Oh mercy. I am not in favor of this foolishness. Apart from the fact that I am emphatically NOT a Twilight fan, these covers are sort of…well, sort of boring. Aren’t they? I don’t get any sense of the books – particularly Wuthering Heights, which I’ve read! – from them.

Yeah, at best you roll your eyes, at worst, you think Twilight rip-off, that’s likely to not be very good.

A couple of things crossed my mind with this post:

    1. Generally I find the UK covers much more interesting. I’m surprised that they opted to use the Twilight-look-alike cover for The Forest of Hands and Teeth (side note: I always want to type “hand and feet”??). The US cover is what caught my attention first before I even read the review.

    2. I’m torn with using the sensationalism of newer books to increase sales of older ones. I see the pros and cons, yaknow? Yesterday I was at the local Goodwill (thrift store) perusing through their books. I found an old – and I mean OLD – discarded copy of Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret. i knew that, had I no idea the merit of Blume’s classic, I would have looked the other way. I feel that this happens quite frequently to timeless classics. So, by attracting the younger generation to such books like Wuthering Heights because they’re playing off of the audience’s ignorance and immediate “buy factor”, – well – I’m okay with that.

I concur whole-heartedly! Imitation may the sincerest form of flattery, but copying is down right silly….it’s like saying the book doesn’t have enough merit to stand on its own. I understand (and like) the Wuthering Heights edition….it is a classic and redos on those bring new readers to the fold. The Forest of Hands and Teeth should really stick with the original cover…it was much more eye-catching. The “New Moon”-esque creation falls short….almost dropping out of the race before the start.

I just don’t understand the UK cover, it doesn’t tell me anything about the book.

I don’t like any of those Twilight-imitation covers. The original US one is much more interesting and already had me curious to read it. If I had seen the UK cover first, I probably wouldn’t even pick up the book (sad to say).

I prefer the U.S. version, too. Why do publishers change the cover from country to country? I can’t see it makes that huge a difference on sales.

Some times it’s great, the different US & UK covers for the Harry Potter books, was always a lot of fun, poring over each for the slightest clue. :D

And, well if you ever come across the horrible original UK cover for Twilight…

I often like UK covers better than those for US releases, but I definitely prefer the North American cover here. It’s haunting and evocative, while the UK one is just… too NEW MOON.

As far as other Twilighty covers go, I recently saw a copy of one of C.S. Lewis’s theological works that sported the exact same stock photo of two hands holding an apple. Talk about misleading.

Not only is it, too like New Moon, but it doesn’t even get that right. You’re right the US one is haunting and evocative, this one is just insipid… :(

Personally I am not a Twlight fan, and I have chose to avoid even reviewing the series on my own book blog. I tend to focus on other less well known, or at least less popular books. (On a side note: The Forest of Hands and Teeth looks very interesting, especially the US cover art. I’ll have to try to find a copy for myself.)

And a great blog it is too, just had a good nosy around. Very impressive.

I noticed you enjoyed Philip Reeve, have you read his Hungry City Chronicles/Mortal Engines Quartet? I can highly recommend them if you haven’t.

Yes, I read the entire Mortal Engines Quartet. The ending was simply amazing the way it looped back around to the start as if guiding the reader right back to the first book again.

What an ingenius literary idea! Phillip Reeve is an amazing author.

I’m glad that you enjoyed your “nosy around” my blog. ;) Been writing it for a while. By the way I was really impressed by the way you laid out the recent Book Review Blog Carnival, and I am copying your layout (though changing the colors) for my hosting of the carnival in two weeks.

It’s an extraordinary series, with one of the best opening lines I’ve come across :D There’s a prequel out as well, that I need to get hold of at some point. (Fever Crumb)

Glad you liked my layout of the Blog Review Carnival, I look forward to seeing yours. (And I’ll be sure to submitting a review or two!) :D

oh man! Why the hell did they change the cover of The Forest of Hands and Teeth??? So stupid!! The US cover was just perfect…I don’t get these decisions sometimes…The twilight thing just baffles me…I mean, I only read the first book and it was ok, but I don’t know if I’d want people to think every other book was Twilight 2

I nearly dropped the thing in horror when I looked at it in the shop, they only had spines showing on the shelf and then I pulled it off the shelf and recoiled. :)

Oh, I know the book is nothing like Twilight, I’ve read some really good reviews about it across the blogosphere, the fact that is is trying to ‘fool’ buyers rather that selling itself on it’s own merits, is the real shame.
