I love Death of Rats and Veinari (it would be great if he had his own novel). I would probably add Tiffany Aching in place of Dibbler. I am also not a big Rincewind fan. although I do think he should stay on the list.

Tiffany, very nearly made the list, but with so many great characters and only 10 spots, there were always going to be people that beat her to it unfortunately. Annnd remove Dibbler? How could you! :o

Is it really bad that I’ve never actually READ a Discworld book? I know…I know….and I call myself a fantasy fan! But I am fairly new to the genre, and truthfully, I have no idea where to start. It all looks rather confusing.

You can find a reading guide here. That’ll tell you which books go in which ‘series’ and in which chronological order. But they can pretty much all be read as stand-alone books, so don’t hesitate to nose about the summaries and pick whichever strikes your fancy most!

It took me years to get into the Discworld series – mostly because it took me years to align with Pratchett’s humour and style. If it turns out you don’t like his humour, you probably won’t find a single book of his that you enjoy – but I started with The Last Hero, the final book in the Rincewind series. Both The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic are his earliest books and seem to be considered his weakest. That doesn’t mean that they’re bad (per se), just that he’s still defining Discworld and finding his footing.

I hope that helps any and that you’ll enjoy whichever Pratchett book you choose to start with!

I’ve only just started discovering Discworld ( have read Color of Magic and Light Fantastic), but so far Death is my favorite character. Looking forward to reading Mort next.

Mort’s an excellent read, one of my favourites in the series. :)

I need to read more from the series in order to have an opinion…

I still feel like I’m not well-versed enough in all the characters to make an opinion, but from what I’ve read I’d definitely put Vimes and Rincewind higher than they are. (And add Luggage! I love Luggage.)

Having read some of the series, I do think Rincewind is lower-bottom material, but I’ll always have a soft spot for him. My introduction to Discworld in general were the two PC games based on some of the books and they feature Rincewind as the protagonist. It was great fun to read Guards! Guards! and then replay the first Discworld game to see how the book was adapted to suit a pretty new storyline. ^-^

Now you see, Rincewind is there simply because of the softspot I have for him, Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic were my entry into the Discworld. But I have to say, The Luggage very nearly took his spot!

Without a doubt, I’d have to put Samuel Vimes as my favorite Discworld character of all time. I have enjoyed the growth in his character over the course of the series.

    My list would be:

    1. Samuel Vimes
    2. Lord Vetinari
    3. Captain Carrot
    4. DEATH
    5. Moist von Lipwig
    6. Susan Sto Helit
    5. Nobby Nobs
    6. Granny Weatherwax
    7. Sybil Ramkin
    8. The Luggage
    9. Maurice
    10. Leonard de Quirm

I enjoyed your list. It is always nice to find another Discworld fan.

Now, you see this is the problem with other peoples lists, you keep seeing people you forgot to add to put in yours! Nobby Nobbs! being one of them. :D
