Sunday Salon: 08/03

sundaysaloon.pngWelcome to all Sunday Saloners old and new!

Well it’s been a quiet old week reading wise (and an even quieter one on the blog) I have mangaged to get to a little reading done, finishing up The Last Colony by John Scalzi (and you can expect a review on that later today).

Thursday, was World Book Day in the UK and it completely passed me by, which was a shame as I had intended to blog about it, it wasn’t until Rob posted about it that I remembered. I don’t think it was helped by the fact I was fairly underwhelmed by the choice of Quick Reads & £1 Books this time around.

One of the best bookish quotes I’ve come across this week, was by Nick Hornby with the launch of his writers table at Waterstones. Discussing David Almond’s young adult novel, Skellig he had this to say:

“Refusing to read this book on the grounds that you are not a child makes as much sense as refusing to read crime fiction because you are not a criminal. A deep and lovely book.”

A more perfect retort to those who question the validity of reading Young Adult stuff, when you are anything but, I can not think of!

Talking of reading Young Adult stuff, my plans for today include the rest of PC and Kirsten Cast’s Marked first book in their House of Night series. (Why yes I am having a bit of a pulpy vampire novel kick at the moment, why do you ask? :) ) Which should be followed by Girl Meets Boy a book I grabbed from the library this week following this reivew by Rhinoa.

Hope your Sunday is a bookish and relaxing one!

I have the Marked Series on my list of must -reads for this year. I love a good vampire story. Great quote by Hornby. I’ve read most of Almond’s books and have enjoyed them. I hate it when people poo-poo YA literature…there is some fantastic stuff out there that is just as deep as Adult Lit….too bad for those that won’t read it, because they’re truly missing out on some great books!

OK…for the record, I a HUGE fangirl of the House of Night series!! Book 5 is being released on Tuesday, and I’m so there to get it!! I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump, but with a trip to the library (and a great John Green book), I think I’ve finally kicked it. Now, it’s a Vampire reading marathon that will completely take me out of it!!
