Pendragon #3:The Never War by D.J. Machale | Narrated by William Dufris

A Real Tum-Tigger!

The third in D.J. Machale’s, Pendragon series, sees Bobby Pendragon & Spader, flume back in time to First Earth to just before the outbreak of WW2.

The set-up is sightly different this time around, with Mark and Courtney’s story sandwiching the main plot, as they read Bobby’s journals of his time on First Earth in their entirety. While dodging New York gangsters, Bobby must uncover Saint Dane’s evil plans and all that threatens this territory First Earth but with war brewing, is he ready to fight for the salvation, not only of First Earth, but of everything he has ever known?

As the story plays out and Bobby unravels the mystery, we discover a little more of the true evil that is Saint Dane, (Spoiler) I won’t explain why here, because I am sure people are still discovering this series just like myself, and haven’t yet read them all, suffice it to say, at the end Bobby learns that some victories are hollow.

Once again I loved William Dufris’ narration, and the first person perspective of Bobby’s journals proves perfect for an audiobook version, but it is, again, the device of the journals that is the series’ week point, if Bobby has been able to write the journal and send it back to Mark and Courtney to read, then Bobby must at least still be alive. Doesn’t mean you don’t get caught up in the adventure of course, but that fact is still there at the back of your mind.

Saying that, I think I’m going to continue to ‘read’ this series on audiobook, as I think it adds so much to the experience and it makes the trips to and from work much more interesting.

Rating: ★★★★☆

These were popular on my classroom shelves, and I’m kind of sorry I let the kids take them when I quit teaching. There are a lot of kids around here who would swear fealty to me if they didn’t have to join the queue at the library waiting for these books. But maybe, as you suggest, I will look into getting them on CD.

@Jena: As I mentioned in the review, I am really enjoying the audiobook versions, so if you can get hold of them, I heartily recommend it!
